We have so loved our time with Annie that we dragged out heels and continually made up excuses not to leave. But eventually there was no more tea to be drunk and no more games of donkey to be played. It was time for goodbyes.
The boys had chosen some heart felt 'thank you' gifts for Annie. A Star Wars Chewbacca mug, a fancy scented palm-oil free soap, a copy of Roald Dahl's The Witches and a packet of edible crickets. (yup, real ones) I think Annie was touched and I was impressed that she and Jack actually went so far as to eat a cricket each.
They weren't great - by all accounts they tasted like dried grass.
The trip down the M1 - the Pacific Motorway - was pretty impressive. This section of the freeway passes through rugged sandstone country and is characterised by deep cuttings and extensive embankments, particularly as it descends to and ascends from the Hawkesbury River.
It rained all the way, and travelling on a high speed motorway amidst Sydney traffic, even on a Sunday, was a little nerve racking. However, we made it into Lane Cove River Tourist Park without incident. Ideally situated just 10 kms from the Sydney CBD and within the Lane Cove National Park, the place is full of so wildlife you'd never know you're in the city.
Unfortunately the rain set in, so we spent the rest of the afternoon immersed in our favourite family game.
I hear you can get cricket protein shakes! eew!
