The Pinnacle

We enjoyed a lazy Sunday morning at the campsite, reading, playing Uno and soaking up the sun's rays.  About 10 o'clock we all hooked in to a hearty cooked breakfast, then packed up for another walk in the striking Grampians National Park.

The short drive to the Wonderland Car Park where this next adventure was to begin provided some great views of the rocky sandstone outcrops that were formed many millions of years ago.

Fletcher didn't last long before his little legs got tired, so into the backpack he went.  The rocks soon towered above us, looking as though nature had arranged them neatly into tall stacks, with many large rocks balancing precariously on top of each other.

.
Jack and Jarrah raced on ahead while Bruce and I marvelled at the irregular and fascinating rock formations. The path was rocky and steep in places and at times the rock crevices were so narrow we barely fit through.

The Pinnacle Walk passes by the impressive Grand Canyon, but as it was closed for an upgrade, we continued on to Silent Street.

It wasn't quiet once we arrived!

The 2.1 km walk to the top took us about 50 minutes.  Not bad considering we were carrying what felt like a small elephant on our back!  A small elephant with a bad attitude!

Bruce was thrilled to be at the top.  The spectacular view encompasses the township of Halls Gap, the beautiful Bellfield Lake and of course the many striking sandstone outcrops for which the Grampians have become so famous.
Jack and Jarrah were pretty relaxed about the whole adventure!

And Fletcher had a Pinnacle plonker.

After spending a relaxing 30 minutes or so lying like lizards in the sun while the boys got their fill of rock-hopping, we headed back down the hill.  Fletcher cheered up and happily walked the whole way back down on his own two legs!

Back at Halls Gap we found the playground and enjoyed a picnic with some lovely fresh bread from the local bakery.  I bought some happy pants and a hacky sack, and the kids enjoyed an ice cream sundae.

Back at camp, after homework was complete, we enjoyed a bowl of hot soup around the camp fire.  Having become quite the expert at damper, Jack thought he'd try his luck at cooking our signature Custard Cake in the camp oven.

Ok, so it was a little crisp on the outside, but nobody seemed to mind!
