Historic Beechworth

We had a change of heart this morning and decided to stay at Glenrowan another day.  The kids got to play a little more ping pong and air hockey, and have a little bit more pool time, and we took a drive to nearby historic Beechworth.

Beechworth is recognised as one of Victoria's best preserved gold mining towns.  We took a stroll through the picturesque township, admiring it's stunning gold rush architecture and it's 30+ National Trust-listed buildings..  We visited the Beechworth Historic and Cultural Precinct, and saw the gaol that hosted Ned Kelly and the court house where his fate was sealed.

We visited the 1850s Telegraph Station, but wisely steered clear of the Mayday Hills Lunatic Asylum, just in case!

Instead we chose to experience honey at Beechworth Honey Experience. We went on the Waggle Walk and learnt all about honey and the amazing lives of bee keepers and their bees.

We tasted an un BEE lieveable amount of single-source Australian honey varieties and finally decided on the Honey & Vanilla Bean flavour.  We saw live bees up close and even got to see the Queen laying some eggs.  Cool!

We learned that the Queen bee lives for several years.  All the workers bees are female.  Typical!  All the male bees (drones) don't do any work, but just hang around waiting to have sex with the Queen.  Typical!  But just when you're thinking how cool it would be to be a male bee...wait for it...should a drone succeed in mating he soon dies because the penis and associated abdominal tissues are ripped from the drone's body after sexual intercourse!!!!!  Gross!!!!  Maybe the boys don't have it so good after all!

We finished our day with the complete sensory experience at the Beechworth Sweet Company.  Where else?
